<image:title>In the Shadow of the Invisible - In the Shadow of the Invisible, 2014</image:title>
<image:caption>Into the late nineteenth century, an invisible substance known as luminiferous ether (light-bearing ether) was purported to permeate the universe and provide a medium for the propagation of light. The notion of ether harkened back to Ancient Greece, where it was elucidated by Plato as the classical fifth element, joining earth, air, fire and water in the composition of the universe. In 1887, the Michelson-Morely experiment set out to detect the relative motion of the earth and the luminiferous ether. The experiment produced the now famous “null result”, where no measurable evidence was found indicating the ether, effectively disproving its existence. Although it seemed to have failed its original mission, the experiment helped establish the constancy of the speed of light, which proved foundational to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, often referred to as the “second scientific revolution”. From the ancient to the modern, we have sought to explain and visualize the unseen, with varying results. Half a world away, and thousands of years earlier, inhabitants of Oba Island created Stone Age ritual rock and sand tracings to guide the passage of the departed into the netherworld. Their labyrinthine courses inscribe a physical path and a spiritual cosmology that formally echoes the path that light was refracted in the Michelson-Morely experiment. Some truths may never be proven to be true. We remain as our ancestors, ever searching for our source, in the shadow of the invisible.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany, France rests Gavrinis, an uninhabited island that was not always such. Isolated and preserved as home to one of the most richly engraved megalithic monuments of the Neolithic era, sea levels have risen to create an island of Gavrinis. Its exterior structure is a cairn, an earthen mound covered with small stacked rocks, which protects and conceals its interior core of a dolmen or "stone table” comprised of vertical stone slabs topped with perpendicular ones. Around fifty massive stone slabs constitute the interior chamber, twenty-nine stones form the side walls, of which twenty-three are ornately carved. The granite walls vibrate with carvings that suggest the enigmatic swirls of fingerprints. The hypnotic engravings contain some recognizable motifs of axes or horns, but most of the line work appears as cryptic maps or undulating motions. However illusive their meaning may seem, the sculpting of these stones was decisive and required intense effort. Noted as an archeoastronomy site, the passage orients with the winter solstice sun, the single day of the year that sunlight may fully penetrate to illuminate the dense network of shadows and symbols. The significance of Gavrinis remains enchanting and unknown.</image:caption>

<image:title>Eurythmy Performance - In the Shadow of the Invisible</image:title>
<image:caption>Performed at Monte Vista Projects (Los Angeles, CA) May 17, 2014 This performance was presented as part of the exhibition, "In the Shadow of the Invisible." It features eurythmy, vocal incantation and a group movement of Cassini ovals (a series of quadratic curves named after astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini who investigated them while studying the relative motions of the Earth and the Sun in 1680). Part II uses Schumann resonances (SR), a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency (ELF) portion of the Earth's electromagnetic field spectrum at a frequency of approximately 7.83 Hz. Eurythmy is a form of expressive gesture developed by Rudolf Steiner (Anthroposophy) and Marie von Sivers as a therapeutic means to visualize the unseen, such as the heard sound or spoken word. Eurythmy works with the principle that speech and tone are intimately involved with the movement-patterns necessary for life. It assumes the existence of energetic archetypes made up of specific movement-patterns, each corresponding to the movement-patterns occurring in speech and tone. Eurythmy is founded on the principle that these energetic patterns and archetypes serve as a kind of “spiritual blueprint” behind and within living phenomena. They are the movement-patterns according to which energy must flow so life occurs. Performance Score and Vocals by Christina Ondrus Eurythmy and Choreography by Marguerite McKenna Audio by John Hogan Movement Performed by: Diana-Sofia Estrada, Paul Gillis, Lauren McElroy, Marguerite McKenna, Sarah Petersen, Brian Ramisch, Sylvie Spencer, Alise Spinella, Clarissa Tossin, Brica Wilcox Alternates: Amanda Yates Garcia, Helen Rebekah Garber, David Prince Special thanks to David P. Earle, John Hogan, Lauren McElroy, Marguerite McKenna, Monte Vista, Brian Ramisch, The Rudolf Steiner Library in Pasadena and everyone whose support, advice and encouragement made this project possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Carnac - Of Shadows and Symbols: Carnac, 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>Carnac, France, is home to the largest concentration of Neolithic megaliths in Europe. Most notable among these are the Carnac Alignments, formations of menhirs (standing stones) errected in rows that converge toward a common aspect. The Alignments of Ménec, Kermario, Kerlesan, and Petit-Ménec span nearly three miles, and at one time comprised more than four thousand stones (currently they number near three thousand). The menhirs increase in size from the eastern to the western ends and culminate in a quadrilateral enclosure (quadrangle). The processional qualities of the formations suggest they were most likely used for ceremonial rituals. Their orientation corresponds to the setting sun of the winter solstice and indicates a culture sensitive to celestial movements and seasonal cycles. Yet, intentions of their placement remain obscure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Installation view in the base of the 60-inch Telescope. Steel dodecahedron, audio, headphones. The "Receptive Visualizer for Seeing with the Mind's Eye" is a steel open-form dodecahedron sculpture, seen here installed in the base of the 60-inch telescope for KNOWLEDGES at Mount Wilson Observatory in 2012. Large telescope cages can be seen behind it, visually echoing its welded geometry. The Ancient Greeks used this regular twelve-faced polygon to describe the shape of the universe. At the center of the sculpture is suspended a five-inch quartz crystal. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals found on earth, whose uses range from mystical rituals to high precision optical devices, such as the large prisms used to conduct the first speed of light test at Mount Wilson Observatory. This installation featured a three-rotation-per-minute motor and an audio recording of an incantation. The audio calls out names or states of visualization as listed in a found text called "Seeing with the Mind's Eye,” conflating scientific and metaphysical histories.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Parallax Paintings - Parallax Paintings</image:title>
<image:caption>The series of shaped canvas paintings, Receptive Visualizations and Parallax Paintings, invokes references to crystalline structures, mystical icons, and diagrammatic images. Decisively shaped canvases utilize two-dimensional perspective, vanishing points, and parallax to generate an experience of perceptual flux. The extended shapes and large-scale call attention to the space of architecture, and allow the viewer to investigate a revealing of the object in space. As one moves around the painting, perspective shifts become intentionally exaggerated; the outer form appears dramatically different when viewed from the right, left or center. The painted surfaces also appear to change depending on the angle. Silver metallic areas reflect light, wall, or the viewer in the act of viewing. Contrasting use of radiant paint furthers this shift. Each thick canvas edge is painted with a high-intensity fluorescent paint. Initially this appears to be the glow of a light-source, but it is in fact an unexpectedly warm and reflective shadow produced through paint. This fluorescence charges the canvases with illumination; they appear to hover and radiate light. These formal elements open philosophical inquiries of phenomenology and the sublime, but moreover, ask the viewer to experience. Through the construction of these objects, I hope to bring the viewer into a focused awareness of the sensations of perception. A reference present in my series is Frank Stella’s early polygon paintings, which marked a moment where painting as object and painting as illusionistic image representation were able to coexist. Michael Fried noted Stella’s early work as a potential bridge between the image of representation and the object of minimalism in his essay, “Shape as Form: Stella’s Irregular Polygons.” Moreover, historically this moment became the epicenter of a dualistic feud between transcendence and literalism in art. My interest in this moment lies in the possibilities of simultaneity and ambiguity—for art to reveal the plurality of perspectives located in the flux of perception and culture. I therein understand my shaped canvas paintings to function in terms of parallax and paradox-- to acknowledge the relative position of a point of view where seemingly simultaneous contradictions may coexist and inform one another. The work hovers in a space of decisive ambiguity, simultaneously invoking skepticism and belief, clarity and illusion, and ultimately, a reckoning with the directness of phenomenological experience and the possibility of transcendence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>cast concrete, pigment, quartz 12” x 12” x 2” Many ancient celestial artifacts and sites are rendered in stone, often with a presence of quartz. White quartz may have been particularly prized for its light reflective quality—think of it shimmering in moonlight. This series experiments with a contemporary analogy using everyday construction materials to explore the parallel of the terrestrial to the celestial and how the proliferation of materials like concrete contribute to the indelible human mark on our planet and our view of the cosmos. As construction has increased worldwide, so has the epidemic of light pollution. Currently over one-third of humanity is not able to view the Milky Way and over 90% of the U.S. is considered light polluted. Light bleed also disrupts the circadian rhythms of species, including human-beings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cosmodesic Dome - Cosmodesic Dome: Bortle Scale Nightscapes, 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>19” x 24” paper collage: hand-cut vintage photographs, laser print, artists tape on bristol board This paper collage concept drawing imagines the Cosmodesic Dome amid various nightscapes along the observable night sky spectrum. Light pollution is measured using the Bortle Scale, a nine level numeric scale with 1 being the darkest sky sites and 9 being heavily light polluted inner-city areas. The lower composition juxtaposes city and suburban skyscapes with artificial light sources which give rise to dark sky and deep space observation at the composition’s top. Here the Cosmodesic Dome is imagined to hold the observable Milky Way Galaxy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cosmodesic Dome - Cosmodesic Dome: One Sky, 2023</image:title>
<image:caption>24” x 19” paper collage: hand-cut vintage photographs, laser print, artists tape on bristol board This paper collage imagines the Cosmodesic Dome amid the earthly habitats endangered by climate change and light pollution. Soaring mountains and wildflower blooms give way to melting icebergs and cloud laden skies devoid of birds. It's hard to discern if it is natural beauty or human impact we are seeing. It both celebrates natural wonders and worries for their demise. The form of the Cosmodesic Dome is imagined transparent, overlaying a celestial chart displaying different star magnitudes to suggest the dancing light inside the perforated dome. The vintage image sources summon utopian ideals while pivoting to the contemporary climate imperative.</image:caption>
